The Iranian foreign minister has decried the US allegation that the Syrian government is preparing for a chemical attack, and warned Washington against using such ‘false pretexts’ for escalation of conflict in the Arab country.
“Another dangerous US escalation in Syria on fake pretext will only serve ISIS, precisely when it’s being wiped out by Iraqi and Syrian people,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a post in his Twitter account on Tuesday.
His remarks came after a US warning to the Syrian leadership that it will pay a heavy price for any chemical weapons attack.
The White House had claimed on Monday that the preparations in Syria were similar to actions before an alleged chemical attack on April 4.
The US allegation was also denounced by Russia as ‘unacceptable’.
“I am not aware of any information about a threat that chemical weapons can be used,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
“Certainly, we consider such threats to the legitimate leadership of the Syrian Arab Republic unacceptable.”
