Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a phone conversation discussed a range of issues and called for closer relations between Tehran and Moscow.
In the conversation, President Rouhani said enhancement of strategic relations with the neighbors, particularly with Russia, constitutes a principled policy of Iran.
Stressing the need for closer economic interaction between the two countries, he said Iran welcomes cooperation with the Russian investors and private sectors in the implementation of various projects.
President Rouhani also touched on the complicated situation in the region and the conflicts in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria, emphasizing the necessity for close coordination between Iran and Russia in resolving the tensions and in the fight against terrorism.
He further described the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a multilateral agreement, and slammed the US government for violating the nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
Rouhani underlined that Iran has remained fully committed to the nuclear deal, saying the reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency have verified such commitment.
For his part, Putin called for stronger relations between Russia and Iran, saying the Russian investors and economic activists are eager to be involved in projects inside Iran.
He also urged close interaction between Tehran and Moscow in settling the regional conflicts, particularly in the fight against terrorism in Syria, saying Tehran-Moscow cooperation has yielded good results in stabilizing the situation in the region.
Putin also noted that the IAEA has verified Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and emphasized that violation of the deal by any side would be a breach of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
