Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi has strongly denounced the racist remarks made by US President Donald Trump against the nation of Afghanistan.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mousavi said the “unacceptable” comments threaten international peace and security.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran stands by the resilient nation, the government, and the educated people of the brotherly and neighbouring country of Afghanistan,” Mousavi added.
Speaking in a joint press briefing at the White House with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, Trump said the US military could quickly end a war in Afghanistan.
“If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I could win that war in a week. I just don’t want to kill 10 million people,” he said.
“I have plans on Afghanistan that, if I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the Earth. It would be gone,” he said.
“It would be over in — literally, in 10 days. And I don’t want to do — I don’t want to go that route.”
Trump also referred to the use of the so-called “Mother of All Bombs” in Afghanistan in April 2017, which was the largest non-nuclear bomb ever detonated, and said using more would be an “easy solution”.
“They were going to make many of them. And I said, “No, we don’t have to. I don’t want to drop that. I don’t want to do that’,” Trump said.
“So many easy solutions. That’s actually the easy solution. And they’d come in and they’d say, ‘Let’s have peace.’ But you don’t have to do that.”
