Ebrahim Raisi, the conservative presidential candidate in Iran’s 2017 election, has lashed out at Trump’s anti-Tehran remarks, saying that the Iranian nation expects the government to show practical, rather than rhetorical, response to the US president’s statements.
Raisi, who is now the Custodian of Astan Quds Razavi (Imam Reza’s holy shrine in Mashhad), said the smiles of US authorities in the past and their angry words today are not a new thing to the Iranians.
In a Farsi statement on Saturday quoted by Tasnim, Raisi said, “The fact is that the threats and insults of US president against Iran’s history, geography and grandeur, after four years of negotiations, provided a good experience for the Iranian people whose wise Leader had repeatedly predicted such things.”
“It has to be proved in practice that these threats and sanctions have no effect on our nation’s will. Hard work and being at the service of the nation while relying on our domestic capabilities is a practical means of standing up against the United States,” he stressed, calling on Rouhani’s government to take practical action against the US.
Raisi, meanwhile, hailed the harmony among the Iranian officials against Trump’s words, describing it as a “necessary auspicious event”.
