“EU’s Support for Iran Nuclear Deal Not for Economic Reasons”

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says the European Union regards the Iran nuclear deal as one of its major achievements, and its support for the JCPOA is not for economic reasons.

Speaking in a live interview with Iran’s state TV, Araqchi said the nuclear deal is recognized as an achievement of the EU foreign policy; therefore, it is politically important for them to maintain the agreement.

Araqchi said the nuclear agreement is of security significance for the Europeans since they believe that without the deal, the Middle East will not be safer, and if the deal breaks up, the situation in the Middle East will get worse.

According to a Farsi report by the Fars News Agency, he further mentioned that the US president’s attempts to make changes to the JCPOA are not something new as during his electoral campaigns Donald Trump was talking of tearing down the deal.

Araqchi further noted that a diplomatic row over the issues has been in process between the Iranian team and the United States over the past year.

“In this diplomatic battle, an unprecedented thing happened and Iran succeeded in isolating the US allies. None of the US allies in Europe and East Asia agreed with Trump’s request to terminate the deal or even including some changes in it.”

The senior Iranian diplomat added that the nuclear agreement enjoys a solidity that cannot be easily terminated and torn down.

“Trump was claiming that he could get out of the deal with an executive order, but he failed to do that in practice as the accord is part of a UN Security Council resolution. Such a move means breaking down a Security Council resolution by one of the members which would destroy the credibility of the Security Council and the US,” underlined Araqchi.

Iran Managed to Isolate US President

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian top diplomat noted that in the past year, Iran has isolated Trump in various areas and this was a diplomatic victory for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Regarding the benefits of the JCPOA, Araqchi pointed out that the deal could remove sanctions against Iran in various fields. He stressed that in the area of energy, all the nuclear-related sanctions have been lifted, and Iran’s oil sales have returned to the normal level with oil revenues returning.

At the end, Araqchi once again reiterated that the nuclear deal would not be renegotiated neither at present nor in the future.

He said no part of the JCPOA will be a topic of negotiation anymore.
