US Return to JCPOA to Guarantee Success of Japan PM’s Iran Visit: Official

Iran says the upcoming visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Tehran can be successful if efforts are made to return Washington to the Iran nuclear deal and remove sanctions on Tehran.

“An effort to bring the US back to the Iran nuclear deal, compensating Iran for the loses it has sustained following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and removing all transnational sanctions against the Islamic Republic could be a guarantee for the success of the upcoming visit of the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Tehran,” said the spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

In an article published by Fars news agency on Saturday, Keyvan Khosravi also hailed the relations between Iran and Japan in economic and political areas, saying they have always been growing and stable.

“The visit of Japanese prime minister to Iran certainly serves as a significant measure to strengthen mutual ties between Iran and Japan. It goes without saying that Japan’s top official will use the visit as a chance to promote his country’s political status,” the op-ed said.

He went on to say that Japan’s approach towards legal and political norms has been approved by the international community, and has not been hampered by extreme measures.

According to Khosravi, preserving and promoting their economic and political status at the international arena is among the main principles which Japanese people feel duty-bound to observe.

He said the status serves as a national capital and is deeply interconnected with the country’s national identity.

Abe is set to travel to Tehran on Wednesday. Japanese media say the visit is aimed at easing tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The trip comes after US president Donald Trump expressed support for Japan to reach out to the Islamic Republic in a meeting with Abe last week. Abe will become the first sitting Japanese Prime Minister to visit Iran in four decades.
