Iraqi Kurdistan’s PM in Tehran to Mend Ties: Envoy

The Iraqi Kurdistan region's prime minister has arrived in Tehran to warm up Erbil’s frosted ties with the Islamic Republic, according to what the Kurdish envoy says.

The Iraqi Kurdistan region’s representative to Tehran Nazem Dabbagh says the details of KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani’s ongoing visit to Tehran have not been announced, yet.

However, Dabbagh added, Barzani will definitely have meetings with senior Iranian officials.

According to a Farsi report by the E’temad news website, he said the Iraqi Kurdistan region has always sought good and strong relations with Iran.

The envoy underlined that relations between the Kurdistan region and Tehran unfortunately turned a little frosty following a referendum on Kurdistan’s secession from Iraq.

Hence, the official said, mutual relations need to be boosted, and that is why Kurdistan’s premier is visiting Tehran at the head of a delegation.

Dabbagh made it clear that the issue of Kurdistan’s secession will not be on the agenda of talks during Barzani’s visit.

Rather, he noted, the trip is aimed at having cooperation and consultations with Iran.

He said Kurdistan attaches great importance to its geographical position as the region is located in close proximity to Iran, which makes it all the more necessary to have more consultations and cooperation in order to iron out problems.
