Spokesman for the Iranian administration Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said the country’s population is set to reach 84 million by the end of the 6th 5-year development plan (2016-2021).
In a meeting with members of the incoming parliament, Nobakht said that a proportional plan for economic growth has been under consideration to stabilize the population growth rate at 2.1 and to avert a large-scale aging population in Iran.
A sharp decline in birth rates in recent years has caused concern.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has repeatedly raised the alarm over the negative impacts of an aging population, calling for essential scientific planning to encourage population growth.
Back in June 2015, the Leader sent a proclamation to President Hassan Rouhani outlining the general policies of the country’s 6th 5-year development plan.
The document lays out a grand five-year scheme for Iran’s development from 2016 to 2021.
Comprising 80 provisions, the document has an emphasis on policies to turn the tide of decreasing population.
