A look at Iranian newspaper front pages on April 22

IFP has taken a look at the front pages of newspapers on Wednesday and picked headlines from 14 of them. IFP has simply translated the headlines and does not vouch for their accuracy.

Comments by the government spokesman in a press conference about cash subsidies and withdrawal of money from the National Development Fund dominated the front pages of Iranian newspapers on Wednesday. The developments of Yemen and the lengthy prison sentence handed down in the case of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi also were in the news.

Abrar: “Government has not eliminated any groups from its cash subsidies scheme,” said the government spokesman.

Aftab-e Yazd:Documents on dirty money are ready [to be presented to MPs]”.

The comment by the interior minister came as his ministry is under increasing pressure for giving a reformist party the go-ahead to start its activities.

Aftab-e Yazd: A dozen passengers were killed when a bus plunged into a river in Mazandaran Province.

The passengers of the bus were on their way to the provincial capital after their plane could not land there because of bad weather and was forced to touch down in Tehran.

Arman-e Emrooz: “Government inherited some 2,900 unfinished projects from the previous administration”.

Government Spokesman Mohammad Bagher Nobakht made the comment as he elaborated on the legacy of the Ahmadinejad administration.

Arman-e Emrooz: “That reformists have conferred with Ahmadinejad is more of a joke,” said Mohsen Rahami, a reformist clergyman.

Asr-e Iranian: A former US senator has met with a Qom-based clergyman and a deputy minister of roads in Tehran.

A visit by a number of American nationals to Iran no one is ready to answer for.

Asrar: “Economic growth at the expense of the environment is unacceptable,” said the director of the Environment Protection Organization.

Asrar: “A decision will be made in the case of illegal scholarships [granted to unqualified individuals when the Ahmadinejad government was in office] next week”.

The announcement was made by the minister of science, research and technology.

Emtiaz: Some 1.5 percent of the Iranian forestland is disappearing yearly.

Etemad: The inconclusive case of [illegal] scholarships.

Parliament is insisting that the Ministry of Science throw out the case and not make any public comments on the issue.

Ettela’at: The economy minister convinced MPs [and escaped impeachment].

Ghanoon: “IRGC does not need to stage a coup. We have never sought political or economic share,” said Brigadier General Hassan Rastegarpanah, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps.

Javan: The protector of the revolution turned 36.

Today marks the 36th anniversary of the establishment of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps.

Jomhouri Islami: “Political factions should work out plans to promote the country’s status,” said Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Kayhan: They were too excited and took [American] tourists for investors.

[The daily has taken a swipe at reformists who said that US investors were in Iran to explore the possibility of investment.]

Roozan: The Interior Ministry’s permission for the establishment of a new party has become a headache for the interior minister.

Members of parliament [who are opposed to reformism] argue that “Unity of Nation” is the same as “Participation” [which is banned].

Unity of Nation insists it is not the same as “Participation”.

Sharq: “Withdrawal of money from the National Development Fund came after the go-ahead of the Supreme Leader”.

The comment by the government spokesman came in response to those critical of the government measure.
