Iranian FM Confers with UN Envoy on Latest Iraq Developments

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the visiting UN Special Envoy for Iraq Yan Kubish conferred on the latest political developments in Iraq.

During the meeting in Tehran on Monday, the two sides exchanged views on ways to advance political process and national dialogue in the Arab country.

Zarif and Kubish also discussed military developments in ongoing fight against Daesh (also known as ISIL or ISIS) terrorists, the condition of the recently freed regions and the necessity to provide help for boosting Iraq’s stability and security.

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by Daesh terrorist group.

Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of Daesh offensive.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s solidarity and prosperity.
