Iran Wins One Gold, 4 Silvers in 2017 World Karate Games

Iranian karate practitioners have exhibited great punching, knee strikes as well as open-hand techniques at the 2017 World Games in Poland, and collected five medals, including four silver ones, at the international multi-sport event.

Zabiollah Poorsheib took part in the men’s 84-kigram kumite competitions at GEM Sports Complex in the western Polish city of Wrocław on Wednesday, and triumphed over Japanese rival Ryutaro Araga in the final contest, and took the gold.

In the men’s over 84-kilogram kumite division, Sajjad Ganjzadeh lost to Hideyoshi Kagawa from Japan and finished second.

Also on Wednesday, Aliasghar Asiabari claimed a silver medal in the men’s kumite 75-kilogram division.

Hamideh Abbasali added another silver to Iran’s medal tally in the women’s kumite over 68-kilogram section.

Earlier in the tournament, 27-year-old Iranian karateka Amir Mehdizadeh could not defeat Azerbaijani contestant Firdosi Farzaliyev in the last contest of men’s kumite 60-kilogram class, and received the silver medal.

The 2017 World Games, commonly known as Wrocław 2017, kicked off in Wrocław, Poland, on July 20 and will wrap up on July 30. A total of 3,234 athletes from 104 nations have participated in the multi-sport event.
