Official: Iran kick-starts construction of Karoun nuclear power plant

Iran has started to build the Karoun nuclear power plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) says.

Mohammad Eslami told reporters after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the government has signed contracts with domestic companies to equip the power plant.

He said water and electricity were supplied as requirements for the activities of the Karoun 300-megawatte nuclear power plant.

He also added a 24-megawatte power facility is under construction for desalination plant.

The nuclear power plant, designed by domestic experts and to be equipped with indigenous technologies, is being constructed in an area of around 50 hectares near the Karoun River.
