The head of the Iranian Police Traffic Control Headquarters says the number of people killed in car accidents since a few days before Nowruz has reached 486. Colonel Shirani said the incidents have happened during the past 10 days from March 17 until March 27.
Shirani however noted that the death toll shows a 20 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.
Earlier, another traffic police commander said the bulk of the accidents happened on roads outside cities and some inside urban areas.
Brigadier General Seyyed Teimour Hosseini also said traffic on roads across Iran has increased given that the Covid pandemic has largely subsided in the country, leading to flourishing Nowruz trips.
