Iraq says ready to pay gas debts to Iran

Iraq's Ministry of Electricity has rejected media reports that Baghdad has settled accounts with Iran for gas imports.

The Ministry of Electricity announced on Thursday that there are still unpaid debts for gas imports from Iran and that it is ready to pay all of them to Tehran.

“The Ministry of Electricity has transferred all its debts for gas imports from Iran except for December 2021 to the credit fund,” it added.

The ministry called on all news agencies and networks not to mislead the public with false news.

Earlier, Iraq said most of its the power plants have been shut down due to declining Iranian gas exports to Iraq.

A spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity stated that gas imports have dropped from 50 million to 8.5 million cubic meters per day due to unpaid bills.

That has reportedly led the national power grid to lose around 4,000 megawatts, leaving total production at around 13,000 megawatts.
