Iran’s FM Zarif Meet Ghanaian President in Accra

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama in a meeting at the African country's capital, Accra, on Tuesday explored avenues for the further expansion of ties between the two countries.

The Iranian minister is in Ghana on the second leg of a four-nation African tour. He paid a visit to Nigeria before arriving in Accra. Zarif will visit Guinea-Conakry and Mali in coming days.

At the meeting, Zarif said Iran is ready to cooperate with Ghana in the fight against terrorism, and added, “A new chapter has begun in the very good relations between Iran and Ghana.”

He then described the level of the two sides’ ties as “very good”, and said the trade delegation which is accompanying him in his tour of West African countries is among the biggest in recent years.

Also at the meeting, the Ghanaian president recalled his visit to Tehran in February, and noted that his talks with Iranian officials were successful.

Mahama added that the two countries have the potential to improve cooperation in oil, gas, agriculture and education.

As regards ongoing conflicts in Syria, he said the crisis in the Arab country cannot be resolved through military approaches, and voiced his country’s support for finding a political solution to the conflict.
