Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi voiced deep concerns over a series of attacks on the offices of Bahrain’s main Shiite opposition group, the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, by the Manama regime.
In a statement released on Friday, Qassemi said the Al Khalifa regime’s continued move to adopt security and violent approaches to the religious and political leaders as well as moderate legal societies, which believe in peaceful means, is a “historical and strategic mistake” of the kingdom.
“Once again, we advise the Bahraini officials to put aside their policing approach and pave the way for interactions and serious all-inclusive talks through taking confidence-building measures” he added.
On Thursday, Bahraini regime forces raided the offices of the al-Wefaq, seizing their property.
The attacks came after the Shiite opposition group slammed the Manama authorities for a decision to host an Israeli delegation.
Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.
Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.
Amnesty International and many other international rights organizations have frequently censured the Bahraini regime for the rampant human rights abuses against opposition groups and anti-regime protesters.
