Iran Rejects Arab League Chief’s Allegations, Renews Call for Muslim Unity

Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed accusations of interference in the internal affairs of the other countries made by the Arab League’s Secretary General, stressing that Tehran favours Muslim unity and looks for political ways to settle the conflicts in the region.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the Islamic world to realize the delicate situation in the region and the world at this juncture, and urges more solidarity and unity of the Muslim world in the face of common threats, such as the Zionist regime’s aggression, terrorism and extremism,” Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday.

He made the comments in reaction to Arab League’s Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who claimed in an interview with London-based Asharq al-Awsat on Sunday that Iran is interfering in the affairs of the Arab countries.

Dismissing the allegations categorically, the Iranian spokesman reiterated that the only solution to the ongoing crises in some regional countries would be political approaches, dialogue and interaction among the warring sides.

Qassemi also warned that those promoting Islamophobia are attempting to create discord between the Muslims, fan the flames of sectarian and religious violence and drive a wedge between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

He finally expressed the hope that the Arab League chief would consider the realities on the ground and push for unity of the Islamic world.
