IAEA chief: Talks with Iran to continue in coming weeks

The head of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) says talks with Iran will continue in the coming weeks, amid differences between the two sides over what the UN nuclear watchdog claims to be “undeclared” nuclear activity in the country.

Speaking to Reuters on Wednesday, IAEA Secretary-General Rafael Grossi claimed Iran did not offer anything new during a recent meeting in Vienna about its nuclear program, but said the negotiations would continue.

“We are going to meet again at a technical level in Iran in a couple of weeks,” he said.

Grossi said, “It is no secret that we haven’t been able to register some tangible elements.”

“We have an opportunity to reengage to continue our work, but this is going to be happening after my reports’ release,” he added, referring to the IAEA’s upcoming quarterly reports on Iran due next week.

Tehran is seeking a closure of the IAEA’s investigation of “undeclared” nuclear sites, which Tehran asserts is based on groundless Israeli claims.

Iran says the IAEA’s allegations are one of the main obstacles to the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, calling for the agency to abandon the claims to facilitate the progress of the negotiations on revitalizing the deal, which are at an impasse currently.
