French Parliament Speaker Claude Bartolone said that without Iran's engagement, West Asia will not see lasting peace.
“I believe that today, the most urgent priority is fighting terrorism, in which Iran has its role,” ICANA reported him as saying on Thursday. “Without Tehran, the region will not see an enduring peace.”
He made the remarks in a phone conversation with the Majlis [Parliament] Speaker Ali Larijani. Congratulating Larijani on his reelection as chairman of the new legislature, Bartolone said he will soon visit Iran to help prepare the way for closer interaction between the two legislatures.
“The French Parliament is willing to discuss with Iranian official ways to develop bilateral ties, especially in economic spheres, the [global] campaign against terrorism and collaboration between Iran and the European Union to help secure peace and security in West Asia,” the senior French official said.
Larijani said cooperation between the two parliaments will facilitate bilateral relations, which entered a new stage after President Hassan Rouhani visited Paris in January. This was in reference to the high-profile political-economic visit and the economic deals worth $33bn signed between the two sides.
Larijani concluded by saying, “There are major issues regarding the situation in the region which can be discussed during the trip of the French parliamentary delegation to Tehran.”
