Iran-EU Disagreements Still in Place: Mogherini

European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said differences and disagreements still remain between Tehran and the EU, despite a lasting nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers.

“The deal does not imply that all our disagreements with Iran have disappeared overnight. Or that they will disappear anytime soon,” Mogherini said, addressing a crowd at the Global Forum of AJC (American Jewish Committee Global Forum) on Tuesday June 7.

“One year ago, we had no way to ensure that Iran would stay away from nuclear weapons. Today the international community and the International Atomic Energy Agency are monitoring Iran’s nuclear program very closely,” she added.

Mogherini also said that the EU will continue to monitor the full implementation of the deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Elsewhere in her remarks, the EU foreign policy chief referred to Iran’s growing influence in the region and said, “Yes, Iran is a player, in regional dynamics. This is true for both historic and geographical reasons, and you cannot change either of them. The real matter is what kind of influence Iran exerts. Iran can choose cooperation, or confrontation.”

She went on to say that Iran has an interest to choose cooperation.
