Iran in Photos: Abbasabad Lake in Mazandaran

Abbasabad Lake is a beautiful site in northern Iran which also includes a centuries-old monument.

Abbasabad Lake is located in a heavily forested area near Behshahr in the northern Province of Mazandaran. The complex includes one of the nine Persian Gardens registered in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 2011.

Historical structures nearby, which lend added weight to this scenic man-made lake, date back to the Safavid Era: they have been built by the order of Abbas the Great, king of Iran, in early 17th century as a royal promenade and retreat.

The garden was, however, forgotten after the fall of Safavid dynasty. It had been covered by vegetation until part of the site and its handicrafts were excavated with the continuous efforts of archaeologists through the years: it indeed revealed the unique values of a Persian Garden.

The complex is still being organized, repaired, protected and studied.
